For the meme: rhack and “doesn’t matter what you call it”

This sounds like Pivotal Relationship Discussion drama.  o0o

Definitely a PA au.  So, Jack and Rhys have been doing…something for a few months now.  It started with office sex (naturally), and then Jack was taking Rhys to his penthouse and Rhys was waking up in the massive bed in the mornings.  It grew into more than sex.  Dinner, movies, a stroll through the park on their lunch break.  Deep talks and Rhys actually sleeping over without the pressure of getting dicked down atop the duvet.

Vaughn’s the one that brings the issue up.  He, Rhys, and Yvette are at a bar for happy hour, and Vaughn asks Rhys how things are going with his boyfriend.  He thinks it’s an innocent enough question, but Rhys freezes.  Stutters out an evasive answer, then remains quiet the rest of the time he’s there.

When he gets back to Jack’s penthouse for the night, he answers Jack’s cheery, “Hey, pumpkin,” with a question:  “What are we?”

Jack’s instinct is to wisecrack and say, “We’re human.  Men, specifically.  Why?”  Wrong answer, he realizes as he ducks out of the way of a decorative pillow aimed at his head.  Rhys clarifies, clearly annoyed, “Are we boyfriends, or what?”  Jack is just as evasive as Rhys was at the bar, which further upsets Rhys.  Jack goes on to point out that Rhys seemed happy before the issue of labels came up, and he knows he was certainly enjoying their time together.  Why does it matter so much that they stick a label to it?  Happiness is the important part.
